Londoners are immensely busy people. The capital is a vibrant, buzzing hive of activity – but, in amongst the hubbub, people are yearning for something more meaningful, personal, profound.
Being busy, whether with work commitments, family, travel, is great – up to a point. But what do you do when your hectic schedule, itself a direct result of your own success, becomes a hindrance to forging those all-important romantic connections? As the founder of Vida, an elite matchmaking agency, I say to you – don’t worry. There is hope out there.
In a sense, many Londoners are already in a relationship – with their careers. Commute, work, dinner, work, sleep – repeat. So goes the cycle for a huge proportion of the city’s population. A lot of Londoners don’t work to live – they live to work. Dating someone can involve a perpetual tussle with their packed schedule – and that’s not to mention the toll on your energy levels that commuting can have on you!
Sometimes it can feel like you’re the only singleton out there – and yet a study last year showed that as many as 51% of London’s population describe themselves as single. But where are they all? Who are these mythical creatures, and where do they congregate?
One method you’ve likely tried is online dating. Online dating is, in many ways, fantastic – it has revolutionised the London dating scene beyond recognition. However, it can be time-consuming to say the least – in my experience, you need to spend around two hours a day on whatever platform you’re using in order to maximise your chances of finding a match. This really highlights one of the inherent drawbacks of online dating – you and your potential match have no social history, no context to your interaction. You’re starting from scratch – and there are a great many unknowns as you dive headfirst into the exciting but turbulent throes of that first stage of courtship. You don’t know their politics or religion, their views on money or current affairs – and that’s not to mention how they feel about family, marriage, kids.
There is no doubt that online dating works – don’t get me wrong. There are innumerable stories about people now in happy, fulfilling long-term relationships whose journey started online, and I love reading about these – but I am impressed by their tenacity and resilience, because it can be tough going. Before pinning all your hopes on online dating, I’d certainly recommend something else first: getting yourself out there.
Your time is precious, perhaps your most valuable commodity. You simply don’t have time for time-wasters and idle chat, flakiness and false hope. What I would strongly recommend is simply immersing yourself in whatever truly interests you: what are your passions, pastimes, hobbies? Joining a group of like-minded people, be it in a professional, recreational or voluntary sense, automatically creates common ground – and you might be amazed at just how regularly you find yourself encountering people with whom you have potent chemistry and an instantaneous connection. You can even break this goal down into manageable chunks: This month, I’ll join at least one group. If you are motivated, the results might just astonish you.
Another way of meeting likeminded singletons is, of course, by joining a members’ club. I frequently recommend clubs such as 12 Hay Hill to my clients simply for the quality of their clientele. Just like here at The Vida Consultancy, 12 Hay Hill is populated exclusively by some of London’s most exceptional professionals, ambitious, creative and successful. With numerous culinary, business and cultural events on offer, 12 Hay Hill is one of a new breed of London establishments that aim to merge business and social spaces. Coupled with their marvellous dining opportunities and state-of-the-art lounges, 12 Hay Hill could be just the place to meet that special someone.
Whilst endeavouring to follow this advice will surely pay you dividends, there is really no more effective way of meeting the potential love of your life than through a matchmaker. By hiring a love professional, you get more than just a person with a ‘little black book’ of names. A matchmaker has a knack for understanding the nuances of every individual on their books, what they want, what they desire – and who would perfectly complement whom. At The Vida Consultancy, headquartered round the corner from 12 Hay Hill in the heart of Mayfair, our clients are international, driven, all-round decent human beings who excel in their respective fields. We provide clients with a unique approach, combining psychological expertise with business know-how in a warm, personable framework. A matchmaker is a concierge, a guide, a confidante – and a friend.
